Elsie Christine-Elizabeth Smith, 92, of Evergreen, CO, formerly of La Junta and Sugar City, passed away on September 21, 2016 at the Lifecare Center of Evergreen. She was born to John and Katrina Margaretha (Marcus) Heil on September 14, 1924 in Sugar City, Colorado. Growing up she helped her family on their farm doing chores and tending the sugar beets. Elsie worked for the telephone company in Sugar City for a few years. She was married there to Clarence Augustas Woodard, a security guard for the nearby military camp. The couple had two sons, when her husband passed in 1950 from ALS. Elsie remarried a few years later to Glen Smith and the couple moved to LaJunta, CO where they owned and operated Smith's Texaco. Elsie was a den mother and scout leader. She worked at the Koshare Kiva Museum. She also worked for Hurley's Menwear as a clerk. Glen passed away in 1992 and Elsie moved to Greeley where she spent several years before moving to Kremmling, CO. In 2004 she wanted her independence and chose to move to Colorado Springs. She spent several years there before moving back to Grand County and settling down. She lived by herself in an apartment in Granby just across the street from the high school. She loved watching for the great grandchildren and often they would bring friends to visit which gave her great joy. Elsie's health started failing about a year ago. She is survived by her grand children Kimberly Hanna of Fraser, Christine (Abe) Sauer of Johnstown, Brent Woodard of Kremmling, Shennyn Kolowich of Atlanta, GA, and Jared Woodard of Firestone, 11 great grandchildren, 1 great-great grandchild, and many nieces and nephews. She will be missed. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, her sons Clarence Wilfred Woodard and Perry Donald Woodard, and all of her 11 siblings. Graveside services will be held on Thursday, September 29, 2016 at 2:00 PM in the Lakeview Cemetery in Sugar City, CO. Per her request there will be no public viewing. Interment will be in the Lakeview Cemetery, Sugar City, CO. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ford-Ustick Funeral Home. Condolences may be sent to www.fordustick.com.
