Obituary

James "Buck" Dale Jones

October 23, 1942 - December 28, 2015

James Dale "Buck" Jones was born October 23, 1942 in Spearville, KS and departed this earth on Monday, December 28, 2015 at the age of 73 at the Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, KS. Buck lived in many places over his lifetime, but he always returned to the Dodge City area where his heart was at home. Buck was born to Bobby and Ella Rose (Bosman) Jones during the hardships of WWII. When Buck was brought home from the Spearville hospital, his grandpa Jim Jones affectionately nicknamed him "Buck" after a familiar WWII newspaper cartoon. His dad, Bobby, was a decorated WWII veteran and had a dear war friend with the same nickname. The endearment stuck with Buck for over 73 years. In fact, many people did not know it was not his legal name. Buck was the oldest of the eight Jones children, five boys and three girls. He spent countless hours of his childhood at his Grandpa and Grandma Jones' ranch. Buck was a generally quiet and private man who found solace in the horse barn. He absolutely loved horses and devoted much of his life working with them. When he was young he broke and trained horses on the Jones ranch. He and his best friend, Gary Kolbeck, shared blood, sweat and tears there. The two were like brothers and their friendship has lasted to this day. Buck competed in multiple rodeo events including rough stock and roping where he was very successful and competitive on the rodeo circuit. He was named All-Around Cowboy in multiple rodeos, including the Old Timer's Finals (age 50+) in Amarillo, TX. As an adult, his life always included time with livestock. He operated livestock sale barns, horse racing stables, and was a talented farrier. He was often referred to as one of the "original, authentic, or real cowboys." Buck is survived by his brother, William "Bill" (Coni) of Lott, TX; sister, Kathy Heck of Holly, CO; his two daughters, Jamie (Mark) Schweer of Garden City, KS and Kelly (Mark) McGuire of Canyon, TX; his seven grandchildren, Dali (Brian) Hatanville of Roxton, TX, Leslie Schweer of Bonham, TX, Kashley Schweer of Garden City, KS, Shonee Allsworth of Higbee Valley, CO, Jollene Allsworth of Pueblo, CO, and Simon and Cheyenne Rodriguez of Canyon, TX; his 9 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and host of many friends. Buck is preceded in death by his parents, Bobby and Ella Rose Jones; sisters, Dixie Jones and Valarie "Valli" (Jones) Wilson, and brothers, Robert "Bobby" Jones, Rex Jones, and Danny "Link" Jones. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, January 2, 2016 at 10:30 AM in the St. John the Baptist Parish in Spearville, Kansas. A Rosary will be recited prior to the Mass at 10:00 AM.
