April 2, 1939 – August 5, 2019
James Allen Wright, 80, of Florence, CO passed away on August 5, 2019 at The Center at Park West in Pueblo, CO. Prior to being placed under Hospice care, he battled Multiple Myeloma for several months. Graveside services will be Saturday, August 17, 2019 at 10:00 AM at Valley View Cemetery in Ordway, CO.
Jim, as he was known by his family and friends, was born in Ordway on April 2, 1939 to Charles and Mary Wright, the eldest of eight children. The family eventually moved to Holly, CO where he graduated High School. He also attended Otero Jr. College in La Junta, CO and that was when he met his future wife, Hazel Martin.
Jim spent many years farming and ranching, working for Bill Willhite south of Holly. He finally retired in 2012 after working at Seufer's Tree Farm in Canon City.
Jim loved camping and fishing. His family spent several summer vacations at Twin Lakes and Bear Creek near Leadville. He was an avid sports fan from the time he was very young. He especially enjoyed playing football in High School. A caption in his High School yearbook under a football photo states, "The Tall and The Mighty" with him being referred to as "The Mighty" due to his small stature. He enjoyed watching all sport teams on TV with the Denver Broncos being his favorite. In his spare time, he enjoyed wood-working in his shop. In addition to his many projects, he especially enjoyed making wooden rocking horses for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He will be dearly missed by Hazel, his wife of 57 years, their two daughters, Kathy (Donnie) Kelley of Lamar, and Cindy Watts of Holly, their two grandsons, Matthew (Kim) Conley of Lubbock, TX and Levi (Abby) Watts of Denver and three step-grandsons, Lex Kelley, Seth (Sommer) Kelley, and Taylor Kelley. He was blessed with six great-grandchildren, Ethan, Emma, Harper, Brooklyn, Alyssa, and Aspyn. He is also survived by his siblings, Charlotte Cook, Jane (Jerry) McCracken, Marvin (Ruby) Wright, Norma Richards, and Bob (Mary) Wright, as well as, in-laws, Helen Curtis, Joyce Jones, Frank (Martha) Martin, and Beverly Martin. He also has numerous nieces, nephews, and other family members.
He was preceded in death by his father, Charles, and mother, Mary, two brothers, Chuck and Dick, father and mother-in-law, Virgil and Gladys Martin, brother-in-laws, Jr. Cook, Virgil Martin, Jr., George Martin, Fred Martin, Al Martin, and sister-in-law Aileen Haney.
