A Celebration of the life of Dr. Jerry Milton Macklin, 80, will be Wednesday, Nov. 4 at 10:00 AM at the Community Presbyterian Church. Jerry passed away Saturday, October 31, 2009 at his home. Jerry was born June 28, 1929 in Bryant, IN. His parents Paul R. & Juanita (Whiteman) Macklin, were both teachers. Jerry had two sisters, Margery (Stuart) Sweeney of Alexandria, IN and Barbara June Macklin of New London, CN. Jerry and Barbara Anderson were married August 16, 1952 in Lafayette, IN. Jerry served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict from 1953-1955. He taught radio repeater in the signal school at Camp Gordon, Augusta, GA. Jerry received his B.S. degree in Agriculture and Biology in 1952 from Purdue University. He received a M.S in 1956 and a Ph.D. in 1961 in Entomology from Purdue University. Jerry taught Ag & Science in Portland, IN, in the same classroom that his Dad had taught in for several years. Jerry started his career as an assistant state 4-H leader at Purdue in Lafayette, IN. The University of KY asked Jerry to be Area Director in Cooperative Extension Service in Paducah, KY. Seven months later he became State 4-H Leader in Lexington, KY. Jerry became Director of Education at the National 4-H Foundation in Washington D.C. While there he served on the National 4-H Aerospace Education Committee. Jerry became Assistant Director of Cooperative Extension at the University of NH in Durham, NH. In 1976 Jerry became manager of the Sawyer-Meade Popcorn Co. in Rocky Ford, CO. Jerry enjoyed working with wife, Barbara, as a Professional Photographer at Macklin Photography in Rocky Ford. He retired in 1992. Jerry & family built a 18' canvas canoe, a Woody-Pusher experimental airplane and a 16' wood-strip canoe. Jerry is the proud father of three wonderful sons: Larry L. (Janet) of Berthoud, CO; granddaughter: Amanda (Steve) and great-grandson: Connor Moore of Loveland, CO; granddaughter: Kari Macklin of Denver, CO; Son: Tim A. (Stacey) and grandson: Jeffrey of Springfield, CO; grandson: Michael of Ft. Collins, CO; son: Paul R. Macklin (preceded him in death in 1979); 8 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister: Margery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Community Presbyterian Church; 303 S. 9th; Rocky Ford, CO 81067 or the Arkansas Valley Hospice; 118 W. 4th, La Junta, CO 81050. Military Honors will be given at the gravside services at Hillcrest Cemetery by the American Legion Post 8 of Rocky Ford
