Lorene Broadbent

August 18, 1926 - April 21, 2015

Lorene L. Broadbent 88, of Pueblo Belmont Senior Center, passed away April 21, 2015 after a lengthy battle with Alzheimers Disease. Lorene was born to Joseph M. and Edna M. Riley in Rocky Ford, Colorado August 18, 1926 at the old Physicians Hospital. She attended schools in Fowler graduating in 1944. Lorene continued her education at Loretta Heights College in Denver and Adams State College where she obtained her Bachelor's Degree in Education in 1959. Lorene goal was to be a Guidance Counselor which would allow her to become more involved in her student's future. Ultimately, Lorene was awarded a Master's Degree in Counseling in the summer of 1968. With her dream now achieved Lorene became the High School Guidance Counselor At Crowley County High School in Ordway for 20 years with her final Counseling position being at Rocky Ford High School, retiring in 1995. Lorene was a dedicated educator who devoted most of her life to teaching and molding young minds. She was passionate about making a difference in young peoples lives and greatly enjoyed her career. Lorene married Glenn H. Wise in 1947 and they lived together in Rocky Ford and Ordway until they separated in 1967. Lorene later married William H. Broadbent in 1974 where they maintained their home in Ordway until "Bill's" death in 1995. Lorene continued to live in her home in Ordway until 2010 when she moved to an assisted living facility in Pueblo due to her Alzheimer's illness. Lorene was always there to help those in need as well. She willingly assisted many elderly people in Ordway throughout her life. Mrs. Broadbent devoted most of her life to the parish of St. Peters Catholic Church in Ordway serving in various capacities most importantly as organist for over four decades. Additionally, along with local friends, she developed, formed and volunteered countless hours, raising money for The Crowley County Nursing Home. Initially Lorene's dream was to install air conditioners in all of the nursing home rooms. Once that goal was met she and her friends gathered recipes from all of the local residents who had personal favorites. These were painstakingly reviewed and published into one of the more famous Crowley County Cook Books. Literally thousands of hours later this band of ladies had enough funds to build the first Hospice room at Crowley County Nursing Home. She was passionate about making a place for dying patients to be comfortable and dignified. Eventually more rooms were added and Lorene was very proud and honored to be a part of such an amazing project especially doing so with her good friends (Phyllis Boley, Gertrude Swift and Michelle Burmood). Lorene is survived by two sons; Michael (Diana) Wise of Pueblo West and Gregory (Kelly) Wise of Ordway along with six grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. Lorene is preceded in death by her parents, husbands and daughter Terry. Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 25, 2015 at St. Peters Catholic Church in Ordway with Fr. Ben Bachino officiating. Rosary services will begin at 9:30 AM with the Funeral Mass following at 10:00 AM. Interment will be in the Fowler Cemetery. Dinner will be served upon conclusion of burial services at St. Peters church in Ordway. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Mrs. Broadbent's behalf to Frontier Hospice of Pueblo or the National Alzheimer's Association.
