Obituary

Marguerite (Margie) Ellen Schlegel (Miller), 95, went peacefully to her heavenly home on November 2, 2018.

Margie entered this world in Kansas on December 9, 1922 as one of nine children born to Charles and Mary Miller. As a young woman she married Ervin Sergent and moved to California for military employment where she worked as a "Rosie Riveter" welding in a ship yard. When Margie and Ervin's two children, Charles and Mary were born, the family moved back to Rocky Ford to be near Margie's parents.

In 1947 her father and husband drowned when their boat capsized in Lake Meredith. At this time, she began work at the local telephone company raising her small children. On June 20, 1948, she married Nathan Schlegel and they had two sons together, Nathan and Marvin. The family spent their lives farming in the Holbrook area and owned and operated a men's clothing store until the time of Nathan's death in 1990. Margie remained on the farm until 2009 when she moved to Evergreen Gardens. She then moved into Pioneer Healthcare Center in December 2016 where she would reside until her death.

During her lifetime, Margie was the queen of hospitality. She loved to cook and was well-known for her crescent rolls and her baked goods. She taught Sunday School for many years as well as actively serving for Meals on Wheels and volunteering her time at a local thrift store and the local library. Crocheting was her favorite pastime and she created innumerable blankets and scarves for family and friends in addition to receiving blankets for premature babies that a local pastor delivered to Denver hospitals.

Margie's hope was first placed in Jesus Christ at a Billy Graham crusade and she lived out her faith for many decades as an active member of the First Baptist Church in Rocky Ford. She was a faithful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. While our hearts are saddened by the loss of Margie in this world, we rejoice in her homecoming in heaven!

She is survived by:

Son Charles Schlegel, of Bangkok, Thailand;

Daughter Mary Sergent, of Phoenix, AZ;

Son Nathan (Sheila) Schlegel, of Ft. Collins, CO;

She is also survived by 6 grandchildren: Robert Sanders, Michael (Nicole) Sanders, Brandy (Josh) Sass, Morgan (Dustin) Shedrick, Cass (Patrick) Wyckoff, Garrett (Emily) Schlegel, Cody Rogers; 11 great-grandchildren.
