Mary Evelyn LaVoi

July 15, 1923 - May 13, 2009

Evelyn LaVoi slept away at St. John's Hospital in Santa Monica, CA on Wednesday May 13, 2009, after a short but valiant fight with lung cancer. She was born Mary Evelyn Veatch in Rocky Ford, Colorado, to H.L. and Agnes Veatch and as a girl lived in Red River, New Mexico returning to graduate from Rocky Ford High School in 1941. She married her high school sweetheart Kenny Reifschneider in 1943; he was tragically killed in a car/train crash in 1947, at the 2nd Street crossing while she was pregnant with their daughter Mary Lyn who also died in 1947. She married Dale LaVoi in 1949 and they too lost a daughter, Mary Ann in 1952. Their son Greg LaVoi was born in 1955 and survives his mother. The LaVoi's moved from Rocky Ford to Colorado Springs in 1969. Dale LaVoi died in 1985 and Evelyn moved to Los Angeles, CA in 1988 to be with her son. Evelyn was a very talented artist, exhibiting at the Arkansas Valley Fair in the 1960's and was also an incredible cook. She will be remembered as classy and elegant, with the latest hairstyles and affection for high heels. She was a good friend to many and best friend to Greg. A funeral mass was held at St. Monica's Catholic Church on May 18, 2009. A viewing will be held at 9 a.m. on June 2, 2009 at Ford Ustick Funeral Home and a graveside service will follow at 11 a.m. at Rocky Ford Cemetery.
