Mavis "Mae" Smith, 88, of Fowler, CO, passed away Sunday, September 2nd, 2018 at the home of her daughter, Linda and granddaughter, Kelli, under the care of Carter Hospice and Healthcare in Woodward, OK.

Mavis was born in Moline, KS on October 4, 1929, a daughter of the late Gladys Lenore (Culver) and James Franklin Runyan.

She was the widow of Leonard Everette Smith, they were married on May 22, 1948 in Clayton, NM. They began their life together in Las Animas and later moved to Fowler in 1952 where they raised their family.

She attended the Fowler United Methodist Church in Fowler, CO.

Having learned at an early age, Mavis was known for her quilts, crochet afghans, embroidery, and other needlework projects. She was an Avon representative for many years, wearing the jewelry and using the products as much as she sold to others. She enjoyed traveling around the country, both on the truck with her late husband, Leonard, and later with her sister and brother-in-law, Mo and Eb. She became immersed in genealogy research later on, using her travels to explore leads. Her greatest enjoyment in her research was finding distant relatives and forming new connections.

Daughter Liz Legier, of Woodbridge, VA;

Sister Vi Johansen, of Fresno, CA;

Brother James Runyan, of Arcadia, OK;

She is also survived by 8 grandchildren: Jason Lewis, Kelli Brown, Kevin Smith, Steve Smith, Adam Legier, Michael Pegram, Melissa Pegram, Coy Clatterbuck; 6 great-grandchildren: Austin Lewis, Zachary and Kayla Wallis, Bridget, Braxton and Bennett Smith.

Mavis was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Leonard Smith in 1994; son-in-law: John Hopkins; daughter-in-law: Jane Smith; brothers: Robert Runyan, Stanley Runyan, Bill Runyan; sisters: Lillian "Lil" Ramirez and Mildred "Mo" Dunn.

Funeral Services will be at 2:00 PM on Friday, September 7th at Fowler United Methodist Church in Fowler, CO with Pastor Phillip Gibson officiating. Interment will be in the Fowler Cemetery in Fowler, CO. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Carter Healthcare and Hospice; 2324 W Owen K Garriott Rd, Enid, OK 73703.
