Mildred Louise Schafer

June 10, 1928 - January 20, 2014

Mildred Louise Schafer, 85, of Rocky Ford, CO, passed away Monday, January 20th, suddenly due to a heart attack, at Arkansas Valley Regional Medical Center, La Junta, CO. Mildred was born in Lockwood, MO on June 10, 1928, a daughter of the late Linda (Niehoff) and Henry Fred Althoff. She graduated from Rocky Ford High School in 1946. On April 10, 1949, she married Alvin Schafer in Rocky Ford, CO. She retired as a bookkeeper after 22 years of service for the City of Rocky Ford. Previously she had worked at the American Crystal Sugar Factory and State of Colorado Fruit and Vegetable Inspection office. She was active in St. Peter Lutheran Church, Rocky Ford, where she had served as the organist and Sunday school teacher. Mildred was very active in the Concordia Ladies Society and various offices on the church council. Mildred was a member of the Rocky Ford Garden Club, ESA Sorority, Peppy Homemakers, Grand Friends, and the Library Board. She enjoyed volunteering and being active in the community. She is survived by her husband; Alvin of Rocky Ford, CO; her son Fred, husband of Linda Schafer, of Frisco, TX; her daughter Loretta, wife of Steven Allen, of San Diego, CA; grandson David, husband of Dana Schafer, of Plano, TX; granddaughter Rachel Schafer, of Tucson, AZ; and grandson Matthew Allen, of San Diego, CA. Mildred was preceded in death by her parents and sister Dorothy Molthan. A Memorial Service will be at the First Christian Church, Rocky Ford, CO at 2:00 pm on Saturday January 25th, with Pastor John Dell officiating. There will be no viewing as cremation has been effected. Inurnment will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Mountain Creek Home Health, Rocky Ford EMS, or Valley Wide Hospice. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ford-Ustick Funeral Home.
