Rexford L. Mitchell, Sr., 86, of Farmington, NM, passed away Sunday, September 25, 2011, at San Juan Regional Hospital in Farmington, NM, after complications with pneumonia. He was born August 5, 1925, in St. Paul, MN, to Bert Emmett Mitchell, Sr. and Flossie Eardley Mitchell. Rex married Peggy Anne Burgett in Boulder, CO, on June 11, 1949. They resided in Rochester, NY, before moving to Rocky Ford, CO, in 1957, to start his law practice. He earned a degree as a civil engineer and later, his law degree from Colorado University. He was a well known attorney in the Rocky Ford, CO, area for many years. He served as the Rocky Ford City Attorney and Otero County Attorney as well as serving as county commissioner. He was active in the Rotary Club and served as Rotary Governor in southeastern Colorado. Rex was an avid golfer and Denver Bronco fan. He and Peggy enjoyed traveling the world. They retired to Las Vegas, NV, and enjoyed golfing and traveling until their health declined. When Peggy passed away in 2008, Rex moved to Farmington, and lived at the Bridge and finally the Beehive. He was preceded in death by his parents; beloved wife, Peggy Ann Mitchell; and brother, Bert Mitchell, Jr. He is survived by his sons, Rex "Duke" Mitchell, Jr. and wife Shari of Farmington, NM; Mike Mitchell and wife Melody of Parker, CO; daughter, Patty Gerber and husband Paul of Las Vegas, NV; grandchildren, Laura Huish and husband Bobby, Kimberly Mitchell, Christine Mitchell, and Tom Grantham; and great grandchildren, Sam and Troy Mitchell, Bradley and Joshua Huish, Hayden Stalker Mitchell, and Jenna Grantham. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of the Beehive, especially Tamera Howell, who gave him extra special care in his final days. A private family memorial service will be held in Rocky Ford, CO, at a later date.
