Winifred Hopkins

June 2, 1915 - August 25, 2008

Winifred Catherine Hopkins, our beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother, and known as Win to her many friends, passed on peacefully in her home in her sleep on August 25, 2008. She was 93. She had many interests and hobbies, but her greatest loves were playing the organ and quilting. She was the organist for the United Methodist Church in Ordway for 37 years with Bonnie Neely in later years as her piano-playing sidekick. What music they made and enjoyed every minute of it. She gave many private piano lessons throughout her life. She hand-pieced and hand-quilted all of her quilts and quilted items and made all of her grandchildren quilts to remember her by. If you visited her at a certain time, she would have the quilt or quilted item ready to turn in the frame and it had to be turned just right or you did it again (and again) till it was to her perfection. Her particular gardening pride was the array of tulips and grape hyacinths that grew in front of her house in the spring. Cats (most recent, Tabby the cat) were the special pets in her life. She enjoyed baking until the later years when she finally admitted you could buy whatever you wanted and it was almost as good and not near the trouble. She leaves behind lots of family – her five children, Fred (Elaine), Cathy, Dorothy (Richard), Linda and Ted, nine grandchildren with one grandchild, Jason Giese, preceding her in death, and six great grandchildren. We will miss her wisdom, unconditional love, humor, and stern looks which she wasn't afraid to give us if we deserved them. The family of Winifred Hopkins Funeral Services will be at the Ordway United Methodist Church, Ordway, CO, at 1:00 PM on Saturday, August 30th. Visitation will be on Friday, August 29, 2008 from 4-8 PM in the Ford-Ustick Funeral Home. Interment will be in the Hillcrest Cemetery in Rocky Ford, CO.
